Happy New Rockin' Year @ Mighty Yoga!

A lot's a buzzing in 2013 already!  A sweet rockin' New Year's Day class with Rachel raised more than $200 for the Africa Yoga Project!  Then an impromptu yoga groovin' fest w/ Zainab & DJ HyFi on Friday!

Now we're kicking off a new winter class schedule with new times, classes, plus we have a ROCKIN' line up of workshops and programs all winter long!  Remember to check out our online schedule and website so you don't miss out on the fun!  Heck, you might want it to be your home page, too! ;)

And we're also EXCITED to introduce our newest teacher, Toni Hodge!  She's been teaching around town, and we're thrilled she's joined the team.  You can catch her subbing later this month and she'll be teaching regular classes in February when we roll out our 4th Annual February Challenge!  In the meantime, meet this cool chica below!

Hello, Toni!

How did you come to yoga?
Toni:  I came to yoga due to my deep interest in physical activities. I like to give everything a try, so while in college I gave it a chance, and just one class was all it took!

What do you like about Power Yoga?
I enjoy power yoga for the very purpose I think it serves, to ignite true empowerment from within myself to help guide me in taking action steps through the challenges in life.

How has your yoga changed since the first time you practiced?
A major notable change in my practice from the first time up until now I would have to say is the evolution of my emotions. How I process them, filter and channel them feels much more manageable and balanced.

Why did you decide to teach yoga?
I decided to teach yoga because it came natural to me, like I have been doing it since I was born!

Any tips for someone new to yoga?
I would say if you like power yoga and you are new to it, try it for at least 2 months before you stop! haha

What is your favorite pose or poses?
One of my favorite poses is warrior 2. It is quite simple, but I feel very strong and centered in my inner warrior when I am in it.

What do you like to do off the yoga mat?
I love traveling. I also enjoy good food with friends and hiking, of course!

What fuels you?
Yoga. Food. Friends. Meditation. Nature. Sometimes the right kind of music, too!

What makes you Mighty?
What makes me mighty.... the two words of the month are... Resilience and Perseverance.

Ashtanga Yoga @ MY this month!

In this month's newsletter, Liz shared a taste of her recent experiences at a teacher training at It's Yoga in Puerto Rico.  Here's the full piece for your delight!  Plus she's offering some of what she learned in a donation class series this month.  Classes are Saturdays at 11:45am, and donations benefit the Beverly J. Martin Middle School Garden Project.  Next one is 3/17!  For more info on the classes, visit here.

Opening to the Challenge, by Liz Falk

As a yogi, you’ve probably had that “aha” moment in a class when a pose you have done dozens of times all of a sudden clicks and melts over the entire body and mind (and even soul). You’ve experienced “yoga brain” – that lightheaded, tired, yet energized feeling after a wonderful yoga class that concluded with a more wonderful Savasana.  And most likely you’ve been in a yoga class when the teacher says something like “and now wrap your leg over your shoulder, hook your foot and lift your hips” (Astavakrasana/8-Angle Pose) and you thought, “She said what? Nobody can do that. I can’t do that.” And maybe one or two people around you actually do it, while others laugh as they try.

To me, this is yoga. It’s a synergy between awareness, finding deep relaxation and challenging oneself mentally and physically. It offers endless opportunity for growth no matter what level yogi we are.  The real question is, are we truly open to exploring?

I’ve been practicing yoga for 10 years and teaching Vinyasa Flow yoga for eight. My relationship with yoga has ebbed and flowed. There were months at a time I didn’t take a class and other months I went once or twice a day. And then recently I reacquainted myself with my personal home practice. I started teaching myself new poses I always thought I could never do, and I began yearning to learn more. I wanted to challenge myself as a practitioner and grow as a teacher. So I decided to take an Ashtanga Yoga Teacher Training with David Kyle at It’s Yoga in Puerto Rico.

Yes, of course Puerto Rico in February sounds nice (and the studio was only a block from the beach!), but the draw to this specific training was David and Ashtanga yoga. I had taken a workshop with David in 2009 that dramatically strengthened my practice. And I wanted to learn Ashtanga because of its regimen (e.g. doing the same sequence of poses every practice), challenging nature and focus on hands-on adjustments. Though It’s Yoga bends the rules a bit, traditionally, Ashtanga is very different than Vinyasa Flow yoga.  This is what I wanted.

The day I got to PR, I dropped my bags and raced over to a Rocket II class, an adaptation to classic Ashtanga, with David. I had never taken such a challenging class in my life; Pincha Mayurasana (forearm stand) or Adho Mukha Vrksasana (handstand) seemed like every 5 poses, and in between those were intense binds and twists, repeated jump-throughs, and arm balances. I kept up the best I could but certainly was not able to do much of it, especially at that pace! One ‘exhale’ and people were bound in a position I thought I could never get my body getting into (and many I still cannot). It was awesome. The coolest thing about it, every student was trying something! Maybe only half of the students were getting into full poses, but every single one was trying, maintaining their Ujjayi while they tried, and settling deeply into their pose.

The next 2 weeks went on something like this day after day. We started at 7am with a MySore practice (self-guided Primary Series practice with teacher adjustments and guidance), followed by lecture-like sessions and practicing in one or two more teacher-led classes (Ashtanga or Rocket), ending our day about 8:30pm. I would bike the 2 miles home, make a quick meal, study a little, go to sleep and repeat. I dreamt about yoga poses, oftentimes waking up and writing down several questions before going back to sleep.

On day four, after already taking six primary series Ashtanga classes, I was sitting on my mat waiting for the morning Primary Series class to start and thinking “I hate this practice, I want to flow! I want to do down dog split, and flip dog… OMG flip dog would feel so good. I don’t want to do this practice again.” Exactly what I had gone to Puerto Rico for was what I was finding the hardest thing to handle – discipline and repetition of the sequence of poses. It felt like monotony, like a chore. I struggled through half of the practice.  And then I let go. I started paying attention to only my breath and how I was moving my body in sync with it. I stopped thinking about it and rather gave it just feeling the repetition. Then I was given an adjustment that made my entire self wake-up. By the finishing postures I felt calm, focused and rejuvenated. I was falling in love with Ashtanga yoga.

The magical thing about repeating the same postures in the same order day after day is that it takes little thought. The body and mind know what is coming next and the focus and attention to breath becomes easier. The monotony is exactly what makes the practice so powerful. As one settles into coming to the mat everyday to do the same sequence, you develop a baseline and then start to notice how your practice grows, how much deeper each pose feels from day to day, how much closer to that bind or that balance you are getting, and perhaps most importantly, you also learn to recognize days where you need to ease up in a pose and accept these as wholly as you do days where you step-it-up. To me, it feels like a moving meditation, where I am learning to trust myself to let go of my ego and instead, to listen to my breath and body.

So while my first and true yoga love is Vinyasa Flow, Ashtanga yoga is now my control practice, it’s my teacher. Since getting home from PR I have tried to maintain a morning self-guided Ashtanga practice while then taking Vinyasa classes a few days a week.  Getting up early in the AM is hard, but the ritual is slowly becoming second nature.

“Your joy is your sorry unmasked. And the selfsame well from which your laughter arises was oftentimes filled with your tears. And how else can it be? The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain”--The Prophet

Jammin' for Japan tonight!

Two weeks ago a 9.0 earthquake struck Japan, resulting in a devastating tsunami which has left the country, and the world, facing not only the immediate effects of a natural disaster, but an impending nuclear crises as well. For us here, it can be all too easy to feel as though these issues are beyond our control and that there is little we can do to help. Yet we must remember that whether we are one mile apart or continents away from one another, we are all connected in this diverse world. And we can use this connection to affect global change.

In our yoga practice we are always growing and moving forward. We have the opportunity to confront the things that scare us and then rise to change. It is this response, this rise to change things for the better, that can help make a difference in our life and, ultimately, the world. That is why there is much we can do here, thousands of miles away from Japan.

There is still room to join Gina, Huck & Jamie tonight as they co-teach the first of two yoga benefits for relief efforts in Japan (the second is scheduled for April 23rd). The 2-hour class will feature energetic power flow sequences and mindful meditation to cultivate this connection with oneself and the rest of the world. It is open to all levels. Together, our collective energy and support can affect positive change that will help heal!

Happy Mighty New Year!

Many of you joined us for our first class of 2011, a yummy detox flow with Gina to benefit the House of Hope Initiative. Yogis were moved in more ways than one after the 2-hour session New Year's Day. Gina had this to offer from the day's session:

"I'm still smiling from ear to ear. We had 23 participants in a pretty demanding detox flow, all positively glowing afterwards! (And I don't mean because of all the sweat!) I expected to feel the fullness of gratitude that come with yoga as service, energized both for the project and the new year. But when I made my offering at the close of class, sharing my favorite translation of Om Namah Shivaya: I bow to that which I am capable of becoming, acknowledging that we are on this path together and bowing in reverence to that, I was quite surprised to rise to an applause-filled room and a chorus of thank yous. Very moving."

And thanks to these yogis and yoginis, the House of Hope Initiative received over$400 in donations! We are so grateful to the generous Mighty community who has supported our various benefits throughout the year. In the past year, Mighty Yoga has raised over $2500 for multiple organizations including the House of Hope Initiative, The Nutrition Clinic, the Sol Stone Center and the Ithaca Health Alliance. Thank you! Thank you!

Got 4th of July Plans? How about some Downward Dogs with those hot dogs?

Join Gina and us this 4th of July for a benefit yoga class to help support a Ugandan orphanage, the House of Hope. Gina will teach a specialty class pairing vigorous vinyasa flow with supportive partner yoga. Be ready to experience the freedom and fun of partner inversions, and discover that through interdependence, our independent practice can grow by leaps and bounds!

The down low on the cause: Gina has been working with local Zoe Wakoff to raise funds for the House of Hope Initiative. When Zoe spent one spring teaching at the House of Hope orphanage in the Kyazanga village in Uganda, she witnessed the extraordinary struggle to provide room and food—one meal per day—for its children in a region mostly characterized by extreme poverty. The House of Hope orphanage was founded nearly five years ago in response to the rising number of children orphaned after losing their parents to AIDS, a country-wide phenomenon that has affected some 1.2 million children.*

In spite of these enormous challenges, the orphanage has cared for 100 children and acts as an elementary school for more than 200 Ugandans. However, the lack of sustained financial support compounded by a recent raid on the orphanage, including the destruction of classrooms and a nearly finished dormitory, threaten to undermine the House of Hope’s mission. Since her return, Zoe partnered with humanitarian organization, World Action for Humanity, to raise $15,000 for the orphanage to start a farm in the hopes that it will offer a sustained way of living for the children and the surrounding community.

“The money that would be saved each year in food costs is monumental,” she writes in her donation request. The orphanage could afford more medical care for the children, some of whom are HIV positive, with the money saved. Zoe estimates, with a farm, it would cost under $20 to feed one child for an entire year, an incredible savings.

We’d like to send a big THANK YOU to the mighty yogis who contributed over $600 in the first two benefit classes Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. We look forward to seeing you this 4th of July!

A mighty thanks for helping the community's uninsured!

In all of the fun college graduation festivities, we didn't want to forget to thank the rockin' yogis who came out earlier this month to practice in support of the Ithaca Health Alliance's efforts to build a new clinic facility and continue their great work for the community. Mighty Yoga hosted a donation yoga class Saturday, May 8th, and we not only welcomed some new faces, but raised more than $100 in donations for IHA! That's mighty helpful! Thank you!

Help Ithaca's uninsured with yoga this Saturday!

Mighty Yoga is hosting a benefit class this Saturday to raise money for a new facility for the Ithaca Health Alliance’s Free Clinic. Bring friends and join us for a fun class for a great cause!

Since 1997, the Ithaca Health Alliance has aimed to facilitate access to health care for all with a focus on the needs of the uninsured. The IHA’s Free Clinic in downtown Ithaca offers 100% free conventional and holistic healthcare services for anyone without health insurance or under-insured. However, the IHA is housed in a space too small to accommodate the many uninsured members of our community. Join us on the mat to help!
